Pamporovo is one of the best ski locations in Bulgaria yet prices there are still significantly lower than comparable ski locations in the country. The area is about to come into its own as it forms a central part of the €200 million project known as the Perelik Project. The intention is that Perelik will be a year-round resort which will include a ski complex, a golf course and areas dedicated to rural tourism, hunting and fishing. Essentially, the project will connect the Smolyan lakes, Pamporovo, Perelik, one of the highest peaks in Bulgaria and the year-round resorts of Chepelare and Mechi Chal. The project has already been approved by the Environment Ministry which has assessed the project. There will be low-rise residential developments which will be of traditional architectural design and hotels are planned in Smolyan lakes area and the Raikovski Livadi resort village. The project will cover an area of around 27,000 hectares and construction begins at the end of 2007, the first stage being to build an extra 15km of ski runs which will be completed in 2008.
