Costa del Sol

What's it like in Torremolinos?

Malaga's closest neighbour to the west, Torremolinos was the first small town along the coast to experience real tourist-based development more than a half century ago, when the lure of its beautiful long beaches and reliable warm weather throughout the year became too much for visitors to resist. Since then, the once sleepy fishing village of Torremolinos has had the opportunity to try filling a number of roles, from a bastion for high end travellers to a paradise for high-energy revellers, eventually deciding that the best approach to coastal living is to be the one place with a little something for everyone. While noticeably calmer than in years past, Torremolinos still presents an arresting slice of Mediterranean life, boasting perhaps more amenities per square inch than any other town on the coast.

Torremolinos

Emerging from its years of transition as a vibrant yet relaxed town by the sea, Torremolinos offers an array of pedestrian shopping and dining areas, comfortably laid out beside its more traditional neighbourhoods, including the famous La Carihuela district (the best fish and seafood restaurants you'll find!) These days Torremolinos attracts young visitors and families in equal number, keeping the town centre, including the popular Calle San Miguel, active and exciting throughout the year. While playing host to a large international crowd of residents and visitors, Torremolinos also presents a distinctly Spanish face thanks to its close proximity to Málaga and the preservation of some of the town's quaint village and old town areas. Recently, Torremolinos has seen its town centre undergo a rebirth of sorts as efforts were taken by the town hall to clean and refurbish its plazas, elegant palm-lined boulevards and its popular 7km seaside promenade.

Healthy, wealthy and wise

While Torremolinos' quick access to Málaga's many civic, financial and medical facilities would seem to be enough to cover every need imaginable, the town also provides a wealth of its own services. Associated with Málaga's University Hospital, the Torremolinos Hospital offers a fully equipped medical centre, while private service can be found at the Xanit Medical Clinic. The Sunnyview School offers international educational programmes to primary and secondary school students, while the town's neighbours both offer a number of alternatives, such as the Benalmádena International College and the Málaga's St. George International School. Those hoping to do more for their health will be excited to find that the town is home to one of the region's most advanced and equipped collection of athletic facilities. Whether you are a professional in training or just out to shed a few pounds, Torremolinos provides opportunities to practice every sport imaginable in world-class facilities.

Stepping out

Given that Torremolinos has had over five decades to nurture its leisure-based landscape, it's not surprising that the town offers residents such a broad range of activities to choose from. While it has certainly left its wild reputation in the past, Torremolinos does still offer a fun and eclectic selection of restaurants and clubs in the town centre as well as the opportunity to attend one of the Coast's few casinos, the Torrequebrada Casino in neighbouring Benalmádena. Beyond the town's nine kilometre stretch of coastline, offering a wealth of water sports opportunities, Torremolinos' outdoor activities include municipal sports facilities and an array of nearby golf clubs, such as the Torrequebrada Club and the Parador de Málaga, one of the first on the Costa del Sol.

A Mediterranean escape for all ages, Torremolinos also boasts Europe's tallest water slide at the Torremolinos Aquapark, a theatre hosting a resident magic spectacular, and even a Crocodile Park, sure to keep younger visitors entranced for hours. Situated between the regional capital of Málaga and the busy and fun Benalmádena, both within minutes by car or by rail, Torremolinos also acts an ideal starting point for exploring the cultural and social highlights of both. Torremolinos is only a few minutes drive from the new enormous leisure and cinema complex Plaza Mayor, located close to the airport and also home to other superstores such as Leroy Merlin, and the long awaited location of the new regional IKEA.
