Costa del Sol

What's it like in Mijas Costa?

Mijas Costa lies to the west of Malaga and covers the coastal areas of west of Fuengirola, including La Cala de Mijas, Riviera del Sol and Calahonda right up to the border with Marbella at Cabopino. Mijas Costa is part of the municipality of Mijas and has around 12km of beautiful sandy beaches. About 40 per cent of the population are expats, many of them British, so there’s a strong sense of community and all the local facilities are easily accessible. You definitely won’t find yourself without anything to do in Mijas Costa because, apart from the beaches, the area is packed full of golf courses, sports and recreation facilities and amusement parks for the kids. Property in Mijas Costa is priced for every taste and budget, with small and medium-sized apartments and townhouses or luxurious villas with fantastic sea views.

La Cala de Mijas is a charming former fishing village, which manages to retain its character and yet still cater for the multinational range of holidaymakers and foreign residents that visit the area or live there permanently. It’s a popular choice for active retirees with a wide range of sporting activities in and around La Cala. Naturally there are several competition standard golf courses, where tuition and equipment is available. A 10 minute drive into the hills behind La Cala takes you into some of the most picturesque countryside in the area with a selection of stables offering riding lessons and horse hire. Imagine a blissful canter in such breathtaking surroundings! If you prefer to watch the horses rather than ride them then the recently built Hipodromo del Costa del Sol race course on the outskirts of La Cala is the perfect place for all the family.

Mijas Costa

Riviera del Sol is just a short distance along the coast from La Cala in the direction of Marbella. Sparkling sea and quiet beaches can be enjoyed from many of the beach bars and restaurants, or there’s the peaceful Princess Diana Park and Gardens to while away a few hours in the sun. Riveria is perfectly situated to reach all the nearby activities and facilities, such as two aquaparks, an enormous choice of golf courses and beaches with plenty of activities for the kids.

Calahonda only began life in the 1960’s and was formed by the merging of two large estates owned by the Van Dulken brothers and the Orbaneja family. Now it’s a thriving community, perfectly situated almost equidistant between Málaga and Marbella. Calahonda enjoys some of the best views on the coast, so it’s worth driving to the highest point, which is the little white monument that you can see from most of the surrounding area, and enjoying the spectacular views of Gibraltar and Africa. Close by are plenty of sun-drenched golden beaches, the popular Miraflores golf and lawn tennis club and the Club del Sol which hosts some high-profile tennis championships. The El Zoco commercial centre has plenty of shopping, eating and entertainment.

Cabopino is a little harbour village with a small port area and some glorious beaches surrounded by sand dunes. Try one of the beach bars and enjoy a drink or some of their just-caught fish that’s sizzling on the barbecue or take one of the boat trips along the coast and maybe even catch some of your own lunch. On summer evenings you can enjoy traditional Spanish flamenco in the Plaza as you watch the sun go down.
Those who enjoy a little more exercise can choose from one 9-hole course for beginners and two 18-hole courses - La Siesta and Cabopino – which are within putting distance.

Healthy, Wealthy and Wise

One of the reasons that Mijas Costa is so popular with holidaymakers and residents is that there’s easy access to medical, educational and transport facilities. You can rest assured that as well as your local health centre or surgery, the first class Hospital Costa del Sol is just 15 minutes from drive from Mijas Costa. Extensively equipped and with a network of interpreters working with doctors, it’s enough to put anyone’s mind at rest. Education is a high priority in Mijas Costa and from here you have access to a wide range of Spanish, international and bilingual schools, either in the direction of Marbella or Málaga. Indeed Mijas Costa is the perfect location for almost anything. Lazing around at a beach restaurant, enjoying a round of golf or tiring the kids out at Fuengirola Zoo or Tivoli World, a wonderful amusement part in near Malaga. Maybe the adults can enjoy a night out in the famous Puerto Banus or at any one of the great international restaurants along the coast.
