Costa del Sol

What's it like in Coín?

Coín is a relaxed but lively town overlooking the Perelias and Alaminos River Valleys from its perch in the foothills of the Sierra de Mijas mountain range. Coín strikes a beautiful balance between rural Andalusian life and the bustle of the Costa del Sol, offering easy access to both. While situated no more than a half an hour from Málaga’s international airport and the coastal enclave of Fuengirola, Coín remains a rural hideaway defined by its agricultural heritage.

Once a Roman market centre for the wealth of marble found in its surrounding hills, Coín eventually became known as the town of 300 orchards for its plentiful and diverse vegetation. Thanks to a uniquely moderate climate and an abundance of natural water sources, Coín is home to some of Málaga’s richest and most stunning land, hosting a seemingly endless quantity of citrus and almond groves as well cork and pine forests that surround the town. Within the small village, Coín presents its traditional pueblo charm with a series of beautiful churches dating back to the 15th and 16th century and an array of fountains spread throughout its narrow streets, giving Coín its nickname "Town of the Fountains".

Coín - Costa del Sol

The town’s rural personality and tranquil nature hide a rich and exciting history that has seen epic battles and legendary figures walk its streets, from an impressed Captain S. E. Cook to a rumoured Christopher Columbus. Aesthetically, this history is evident in the traditional whitewashed homes that surround the central Plaza Alameda and the collection of structures dating back to the age when Moorish settlers made Coín one of the region’s most important urban centres. While still home to just 20,000 residents, testing the definition of the word ‘city’, a title bestowed upon it in 1925 by King Alfonso, Coín is witnessing a noticeable increase in growth and development as more people have begun to recognise the benefits of this distinctively rural alternative to the Costa del Sol.

Healthy, wealthy and wise

Coín is one of many traditional white villages located in the Guadalhorce Valley, creating a community of neighbouring towns and a wide selection of public and educational services. However, most of the needs of Coín residents can be met in or near town. This is especially true since the opening of a large supermarket and shopping centre "La Trocha" on the outskirts of town. International educational needs can be met at either St. Anthony’s College in Mijas Costa or the Sunland School, which offers classes for students aged 3-15 in Cártama. While a number of local chemists and clinics can attend to resident’s basic medical needs, more pressing issues can be dealt with at Málaga’s University Hospital or Marbella’s Costa del Sol Hospital. Plans have been announced to open a private medical centre in Coín in the future though an exact date of completion has not been decided upon. Banking can be taken care of at either of the two local branches of Barclays and Banco de Andalucía. Animal care is also available at Coín’s International Small Animal Veterinarian Clinic.

Stepping out

While undoubtedly calm in comparison to its coastal neighbours, Coín offers its own unique brand of events and activities, accentuating the area’s natural surroundings including a number of trekking opportunities through the nearby El Charco del Infierno, La Albuquera and La Fuente forests. Its ideally central location allows quick access to the cultural and social capital of Málaga as well as the rural treasures of the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park and the lakes of El Chorro. Coín is also home to the Nacimiento Spring, which is being converted into an exciting recreational area, complete with an artificial lake. A chance to tee off is never too far away as Mijas’ Golf Valley rests at approximately 15 minutes drive from Coín. In the town centre, Coín offers a wide selection of bars and restaurants, including La Bohemia, featuring both Andalusian and international fare to choose from. Coín has recently welcomed the opening of the La Trocha shopping centre, featuring a massive Supercor hipermarket, a variety of shops and boutiques and a 7-screen cinema.
