Costa Blanca

What's Alicante like?

Rich in history and tradition, Alicante also has all the amenities to make for memorable beach holidays, and an enviable Mediterranean lifestyle. Sailing, windsurfing and waterskiing are available from the Alicante-Costa Blanca Nautical Club, or the Royal Regatta Yacht Club. Scuba diving is also popular. There are also many cultural attractions to enjoy.

The Romans inhabited Alicante, namimg it Lucentum. The remains are open to the public, further excavations are underway, and you can see the treasures in the Provincial Archaeological Museum. There’s the imposing Santa Barbara Castle on Mount Benacantil, which can be reached via the cable-car operating from Postiguet beach. La Asegurada Municipal Museum has a good collection of 20th century art, including works by Picasso.

The old town, with its narrow streets and fascinating shops and bars is well-worth exploring, as is the palm-lined Paseo de la Explanada, one of Europe’s most charismatic seafront promenades. The modern marina nearby has classy shops and restaurants, and there are plenty of cool parks and other green areas offering welcome shade from the midday sun. Pubs, discos and piano bars stay open all night and the music never stops.

Alicante is an elegant and cosmopolitan provincial capital, steeped in history and culture, with fabulous designer boutiques and high street stores, and offers an enviable way of life to suit all tastes and generations. A university city, it is both young, vibrant and trendy, as well as stylishly gracious. Everything you would expect of one of the leading cities on the Mediterranean… and more.
