Benahavís Area Guide

What’s it like in Benahavís?

A picture postcard mountain village overlooking the Guadalmina river, Benahavís is just a few minutes from Marbella and Puerto Banús, tucked away just 7km inland and known locally as the Rincón de la Gastronomia – the dining room of the Costa del Sol, with some of the best restaurants in the region. Whether you live in the village or in any of the luxurious developments on the outskirts, you’ll enjoy a privileged lifestyle in Benahavís, where you can enjoy all that traditional Spain has to offer and still take advantage of the Costa del Sol’s 21st century facilities.

Benahavís is in a perfect position, equidistant between the international airports of Málaga and Gibraltar and close to fast road connections. It’s a small traditional Spanish pueblo, a favourite with artists, many of whom live in the village and exhibit their work there. The village retains its attractive original Moorish layout with narrow cobbled streets, and has plenty of little shops and some interesting galleries. The name Benahavís comes from the Arab words meaning son of (Ben) Havis, who was an eleventh century Moorish prince. Eating in the village is pure joy for foodies with an enormous range of restaurants of all nationalities and cooking styles to choose from. Dine out under the stars in the beautiful plaza and enjoy local specialities which are succulent roasted meats, particularly lamb and suckling pig. In June, one of Benahavís’ most important festivals takes place, naturally enough a gastronomic festival, when the restaurants offer samples of the best from their menus at the entrance to the village.

Stepping Out

Eating certainly isn’t the only thing you can do in and around Benahavís – walking in the surrounding hills and mountains with their breathtaking scenery is a real joy and there are routes for all abilities from challenging climbs to more level paths through the woods. Or maybe you prefer mountain-biking or the gentler pursuit of bird-watching. It’s all possible and nature in all its glory surrounds Benahavís, even as you play a round of golf within the gloriously beautiful La Zagaleta nature reserve. Of course, it goes without saying that there are miles of beautiful sandy beaches with their relaxed “chirunguito” restaurants and plenty for the kids to do at Selwo Adventure Park which is just down the road in Estepona or the nearby School of Equestrian Art, which has a wide range of riding lessons, leisure and equestrian activities for all ages and abilities.

La Zagaleta Golf and Country Club is just one of the many wonderful golf courses nearby. There’s Monte Mayor Golf Club, nestling in the Benahavís mountains, the Marbella Club in the foothills of the mountains and set among pine and cork trees with stunning views across to north Africa and the Flamingos Golf Club where golfers find themselves teeing off among cypress, orange and pomegranate trees. These are just four fantastic courses in the immediate vicinity of Benahavís, there are countless others just a short drive away.

Healthy, Wealthy and Wise

Benahavís is centrally placed for great public and private health and education services. Residents have several main public health centres to choose from as well as a new private hospital nearby (Hospital Hospitén Estepona). In addition, the public Hospital Costa del Sol in Marbella is extensively equipped and offers 24-hour emergency services and a multi-lingual voluntary interpreter service. Benahavís is within a short drive of several high quality international schools, including International College, San Pedro which takes children from age 3 to 18, Calpe Junior School and the International School, Estepona. Estepona also has a bi-lingual kindergarten for younger children, called Children’s Place, while Bede’s Grammar School and the Mayfair Academy Sotogrande International School are just a short drive away.
